By entering the F5 key while pressing the shift key, you can toggle on/off of a braille display. The default setting is off.
There are 3 types of expressions for braille: English Grade 2, English Grade 1, and No conversion 8 dots.

You choose two modes from them by -Q option, and then you can toggle between them by the braille display switch.

The supported braille displays are Navigator, Power Braille, Braille Note 40A/20A/46C/46D, ABT 320/340/380, Braille Write 40, Braille Write 2000, Braille Memo 16, ALVA Satellite 544/570. When the length of a line is longer than the width of the braille display, you can scroll the output left and right by pressing the key of the braille display. If you wish to make the braille display as a default value, you need to specify -I option in the configuration file al.cfg.

2) Message mode

4. Hot File List and Batch Processing

1) Hot file list

shift + F2 to read files of hot file list

When you press the F2 key while pressing the shift key, you can read a file of the hot file list. The file name of the list can be changed by up and down cursor.
You can previously register in AL.CFG up to 10 files you always use. If you use this function, you can easily read files.

(1) Registering files with labels
->1label ->2label ... ->9label -> 0label, to register files with labels

Specify an easy name to remember after ->n option in AL.CFG.

(2) Registering file names
-+1name -+2name ... -+9name -+0name, to register file names

Specify a file name after -+n option in AL.CFG.

2) Batch processing
F1 six times to do batch processing

If you make a directory named "batch" in the ALTAIR directory and place batch files there, you can execute them.
When you press the F1 key six times and the enter key once, ALTAIR asks for "a startup batch file name". If you can remember the batch file name, enter the name. Instead, if you just press the enter key, ALTAIR lists up the batch files. Select the one by using up and down cursors and then press the enter key.
When you specify a batch file name, you are asked to enter a batch parameter, so enter a parameter if necessary. Generally, you specify an URL or a file name.
You can use the paste function here.

5. Search in CD-ROM Dictionaries

Some of the CD-ROM dictionaries and electronic books explained in this chapter are for inside Japan only.

1)Main supported EPWING compliant dictionaries and electronic books
ALTAIR offers the searching environment for 12 cm CD-ROM based on EPWING standard, 8 cm CD-ROM dictionaries based on SONY electronic book standard. However, not all the dictionaries that satisfy these conditions can be read. Tested dictionaries are listed below. Even if a name is similar, if it is not based on EPWING or SONY electronic book, you cannot access the data.

2) Setting AL.CFG to use CD-ROM dictionaries

Do the necessary settings in the configuration file AL.CFG. The setting items are a display of titles, CD-ROM drives, book numbers, a search program type, a multiple keyword search, an overseas version, direct file accesses, a local character replacement table, IME control, particular options of the tool, and a conditional search.

(1) Title
-M1title -M2title ... -M9title -M0title to set CD-ROM titles
-MAtitle -MBtitle ... -MStitle -MTtitle to set CD-ROM titles

These settings are essential. They will be the labels when you select CD-ROMs.

<Example> Registering in CD2 the title of Kenkyusha's English-Japanese Dictionary for The General Reader.
-M2Readers
(Do not use Kanji characters for titles.)

(2) Drive number
-C1x: -C2x: ... -C9x: -C0x: to set a CD-ROM drive number
-CAx: -CBx: ... -CSx: -CTx: to set a CD-ROM drive number

These settings are essential. They inform ALTAIR in which drives (and which folders) CD-ROMs are located.

<Example> Setting CD1 as G drive
-C1G:
For ALTAIR's CD-ROM dictionary search, CDROM2.EXE of Mr. R. Jiro Tanaka, DAIJISEN.EXE and CSRD.EXE of Mr. Junn Ohta, and EBLOOK.EXE of EBLIB Project are used.

With these search tools, you can specify folders as follows:
-C1x:\dir\ -C2x:\dir\ ... -C9x:\dir\ -C0x:\dir\ to set a CD-ROM drive number
-CAx:\dir\ -CBx:\dir\ ... -CSx:\dir\ -CTx:\dir\ to set a CD-ROM drive number
It is useful when you copy multiple CD-ROMs into one drive in the hard disk.
For example, you can make CDROM1 folder under the root directory of C drive, copy the whole content of the first CD-ROM there, then make CDROM2 folder and copy the whole content of the second CD-ROM into CDROM2 folder, and so on.

(3) Book number
-F1n -F2n ... -F9n -F0n to set book numbers in CD-ROM
-FAn -FBn ... -FSn -FTn to set book numbers in CD-ROM

These settings are essential when CD-ROM is multi-volume, namely includes multiple titles, and when you are searching the second or later title.

<Example> Setting a book number of CD3 as 2
-F32
(For example, when you wish to use Japanese-English CD-ROM dictionary of Kenkyusha's New College English-Japanese Japanese-English Dictionary, specify 2.)
You can get the information on the list of the books included in each CD-ROM dictionary just 1) by selecting CD-ROM by the shift + F1 keys, and 2) by, when entering the character string to search, entering -bc for VEEB.EXE or -C for VECDROM2.EXE and VEEBLOOK.EXE.

(4) Selection of search program
-W1n -W2n ... -W9n -W0n
-WAn -WBn ... -WSn -WTn (n is 1 to 6 excluding 2)
N=1 VEEB.EXE, N=3 VECDROM2.EXE, N=4 DAIJISEN.EXE, N=5 CSRD.EXE, N=6 VEEBLOOK.EXE

The default setting is 1. However, depending on the situation, you may need to use another search program, as each one has functions others do not have. For World Encyclopedia First Edition you must specify VECDROM.EXE of 3, for Daijisen specify DAIJISEN.EXE of 4, and for Random House English Japanese Dictionary specify CSRD.EXE of 5. Also, if you wish to use Kojien Ver.5, specify 6.
By -W option, specify for each CD one of VEEB.EXE, VECDROM2.EXE, DAIJISEN.EXE, CSRD.EXE, and VEEBLOOK.EXE.
1=VEEB.EXE, 3=VECDROM2.EXE, 4=DAIJISEN.EXE, 5=CSRD.EXE, 6=VEEBLOOK.EXE The default value is 1.

<Example> Accessing CD5 using VECDROM2.EXE
-W53

(5) Specifying a multiple search
-P1numlist -P2numlist ... -P9numlist -P0numlist
-PAnumlist -PBnumlist ... -PSnumlist -PTnumlist (numlist is the item number list for the multiple search index 1 and you can write maximum 5 items)

It is to specify to use a multiple search. It works only when -W is 1 or 3.
You need to set a multiple search when you wish to search Mohan Roppo or the Kenkyusha Dictionary of English Collocations. Also, when you search phrases by Readers + Plus English-Japanese Dictionary or search book names from author names by Review Japan, you need to use the multiple search.
To know the item list of a multiple search index, when you are to enter a searching character, enter -pc for VEEB.EXE or enter -V for VECDROM2.EXE and then press the enter key.
A multiple search index usually consists of four or five items. In addition, there is usually only one type of multiple search index, but occasionally there may be several types of them. ALTAIR, however, supports only index 1.

The example of a multiple search for "Review Japan" is shown below. Review Japan has the following multiple search items.

<Multiple search index 1>
Name of the item: the item number
Name of the book: 1
Name of the author: 2
Name of the publisher: 3
The field: 4

The multiple search for Readers + Plus English-Japanese Dictionary is as follows:

<Multiple search index 1>
Name of the item; the item number
Word 1 (a fixed phrase): 1
Word 2 (a fixed phrase): 2
Word 3 (a fixed phrase): 3
Word 4 (a fixed phrase): 4

<Example> Setting of AL.CFG to search CD7 by item 2, 3, 4 of multiple search index 1
-M7Collocations
-C7D:\COLLOC
-P7234
-$71
-W71
When these are specified in AL.CFG, you can perform a multiple search by pressing the shift + F1 keys, selecting CD-ROM7, and entering a character string to search. For a searching character string, if you put spaces between several strings, the first string is handled as item 2 of index 1, next one as item 3, and next one as item 4. For example, if you enter a character string to search as
put up with
it means
VEEB -dD:\COLLOC -pk 2 put -pk 3 up -pk 4 with.
If you enter
subject to
it is treated as
VEEB -dD:\COLLOC -pk 2 subject -pk 3 to.
Also, if you enter
regarding
it is handled as
VEEB -dD:\COLLOC -pk 2 regarding.

(6) Specifying overseas version
-Y1 -Y2 ... -Y9 -Y0
-YA -YB ... -YS -YT

It is an essential setting item to search an overseas electronic book with EBG specification such as Oxford Concise Dictionary. It is invalid only when -W is 2.

<Example> Searching CD4 as an overseas electronic book.
-Y4

(7) Specifying local character table
-!1file -!2file ... -!9file -!0file
-!Afile -!Bfile ... -!Sfile -!Tfile

It is to specify a local character table to convert application-dependent locally defined codes to globally defined standard codess.
It is the setting to use the local character conversion function of veeb.exe and vecdrom2.exe.

-!1c:\winal\plus.egn
-!4C:\WINAL\HDHGAIJI.DMP

The local character conversion tables are included in the package with the names XXXXXXXX.egn and XXXXXXXX.dmp.
The former is for veeb.exe and the latter is for vecdrom2.exe.
It goes without saying that the meanings of local character codes are different depending on a CD-ROM or an electronic book. Therefore, a different local character conversion table must be made for each CD-ROM dictionary and electronic book. However, the local character conversion table supported by ALTAIR's package can be used only for some CD-ROM dictionaries and electronic books.
VECDROM2.EXE does not have a function to neglect local character codes, so the local character codes are output when there is no conversion table. In such a case, it shall be avoided by using a conversion table such as blank.dmp.

(8) Setting of particular options of the tool
-<1n -<2n ... -<9n -<0n
-
It is to set options particular to each search tool, which you wish to include in searching command in addition to the above options. It is a special setting item for an advanced class person.

<Sample> Searching Compton's Encyclopedia 2000 Deluxe using VECDROM2.EXE
-MHCOMPTON
-CHB:\CONCISE
-WH3
-YH
-$H1
-!HC:\WINAL\BLANK.DMP
-
<Sample> Searching Random House English Japanese CD-ROM dictionary using CSRD.EXE
-M2RandomHouse
-C2d:\rhd
-$21
-W25
-<2-b -fC:\winal\csrd.fmt -gc:\winal\quiet.gai

(9) Specifying conditional search
-01 -02 ... -09 -00
-0A -0B ... -0S -0T
You can use it for the CD-ROM dictionaries that have conditional search index (key word search) such as Kojien and Daijirin.
To know what index each CD-ROM dictionary has, select the CD-ROM by the shift + F1 keys, enter -r for VEEB.EXE or -V for VECDROM2.EXE as a searching character string, and press the enter key. Index list is read aloud or displayed.
Conditional search is valid only when -W is 1 or 3.

<Sample> Setting of AL.CFG for searching CD5 by conditional search index 2
-05
If this is specified in AL.CFG, you can perform a conditional search by pressing the shift + F1 keys, selecting CD-ROM 5, and entering a character string to search.

3) Selection of CD-ROM dictionaries
shift + F1 to search a CD-ROM

When you press the F1 key while pressing the shift key, ALTAIR reads the CD-ROM number for searching. By the above-mentioned -M option of the configuration file AL.CFG, it reads CD-ROM title instead of the number.

With ALTAIR, you can search maximum 30 CD-ROM dictionaries. You select a CD-ROM dictionary by the up and down cursors and/or the left and right cursors or a function key and/or the shift + function keys and the enter key.

4) Searching in CD-ROM dictionaries
ALTAIR does searching according to the searching method previously set in the configuration file AL.CFG. When you are asked "character string to search", enter a character string and press the enter key. When a search is hit, ALTAIR immediately imports the searching result to the editing document and reads the content aloud. If you wish to search more in details or wish to search in a different way from the setting in the configuration file AL.CFG, when you are to enter a searching character string, enter first an appropriate option, then a single-byte space and a searching character string.
As to indices, some support kanji character notation and some don't. Electronic books do not support kanji character notation, but CD-ROM dictionaries usually support the one. Even with CD-ROM dictionaries, however, kanji character notation is not supported usually for conditional search index.

Here, the types of searching method are explained below.

(1) Exact phrase search
A search hits only when the entered searching character string is exactly same as the index. It is the default value.

(2) Right-hand truncation
A search hits when the entered searching character string and the beginning of the index are same. If you put * at the end of the character string, ALTAIR does the right-hand truncation.

(3) Left-hand truncation
A search hits when the entered searching character string and the end of the index are same. If you put * at the beginning of the character string, ALTAIR does the left-hand truncation.

(4) Multiple search index search
It is a search using a multiple search index or indices. This index is used to search a subset subdivided into about 4 items. If you specify several multiple search indices, you can perform a searching by AND.

(5) Conditional search
It is a keyword search using conditional search index or indices. If you specify multiple searching character strings, you can perform a searching by AND.

5) Specifying a file to read a search result into

 If you set --option in AL.CFG, you can fix the edit file to read the search results into.
For example, if you set --10, whichever file you are editing, the search result is read into File 10.

6. Internet Access

1) Method to access internet
 You can access internet by ALTAIR

shift + F6 for internet

When you press the F6 key while pressing the shift key, you can execute various commands to use internet. Before entering each of the following command, press shift + F6 keys to call "internet".

2) Basic operation
The commands for net surfing, the basics for internet, are explained below at first.
A command selection shall be determined by the enter key.

shift + F4(U) UP command: (not necessary for LAN connection) to start a dial-up connection
shift + F5(D) DOWN command: (not necessary for LAN connection) to hang up a dial-up connection
F1(G) GET command: to get a homepage. Pressing the enter key does the same. The cursor must be at the beginning of a URL or on the link mark explained later. Obtained html file is converted into text and loaded in the memory. After getting homepages, ALTAIR automatically puts a link mark and a number to each link. If you execute G command on the link mark, you can jump to the linked page.
Entering URL directly: If you enter an URL from the keyboard and press the enter key, the specified homepage is obtained.
F3(B) BACK command: to return to the previous pages referring to the history. You can go back maximum 10 pages.
F4(R) RELOAD command: to display again the current page. When you execute it after starting ALTAIR and before accessing a homepage, you can resume the net surfing from the homepage you accessed last time.
F5(N) NEXT command: to move to the next page in the history. It is to move to the opposite direction of B command.
F6(H) HOME command: to move to the default homepage that is previously set. The default homepage is described by -* option in AL.CFG.
For example, set as follows:
-*http://www.u-shizuoka-ken.ac.jp/~ishikawa/index.htm

The descriptions like shift + F4(U) used in this chapter means that you can perform three kinds of operation as follows:
1. With browser mode, press the shift + F4 keys
2. With editor mode, press the shift + F6 keys, then press the shift + F4 keys
3. With editor mode, press the shift + F6 keys, then press U key.

3) Link jump
CTRL + up and down cursors for link jump

Usually, the homepages you get have links embedded. It is called "net surfing" to visit homepage after homepage following those links.
With ALTAIR, all the links are placed at the beginning of the lines, and they are numbered. At the end of a page, URLs of the links in the page are listed as "Reference". When you jump to a linked page, ALTAIR refers to the Reference at the end of the page.
Incidentally, the control + up/down cursor keys is usually a function to jump to marks. Please note that only when you have got homepages it becomes a link jump command.

CTRL + 6 as a JUMP MODE command

You can also toggle the function of the control + up and down cursors between link jump and mark jump by the control + 6 keys.

4) Using a search engine
F9(F) FIND command: to do WWW search using the search engine previously specified. Specify by -_ option in AL.CFG.
The following is an example of yahoo.com:
-_http://search.yahoo.com/bin/search{charset=ascii}{method=get}?p{text}=&{submit}=Search
If you press the enter key after the F9 key, the following messages are spoken or displayed:

1:text

2: send button (search)
send and quit

so enter a searching character string in the vacant line below "1:text" and, on the line of "send and quit" press the enter key.
In addition, it depends on the search engine you use, but you can usually perform a focus search by entering multiple key words with single-byte space in-between.

F10(E) ENGINELIST command: to call the list of search engine SEARCH.LST. Select one of the engines from the list and execute G command. Place the cursor at the beginning of the URL of the search engine you wish to use and press the enter key. When you are asked to enter a character string, enter the key word for search.
Depending on the engine, you need to input several options. For details, please refer to "Form input" explained later.

5) List management
F7(L) LIST command: to call the list file URL.LST by L command. Place the cursor at the beginning of the target URL and execute G command.
F8(A) APPEND command: to call the list file and append the URL of the current page. When you are asked to register a name, specify a name.

6) Reading a local file

You can read an html file on a hard disk or floppy disk by specifying its URL. Below is an example. Just like an html file on the net, you can jump to the linked pages.

file://c:\homepage\index.htm

In addition, if you have not accessed to the network after starting ALTAIR, you can omit "file://".

With ALTAIR, at the beginning of the html file you got, the URL of the html file's original location is recorded as a comment. By this, just by importing an html file saved in the local machine, ALTAIR can know the original location and can jump to the site. There is so-called "relative path" of URL, and it contains only the information to indicate the relative location from the current position. Therefore, even if you are reading a local file, you cannot access from the local file to the original server that is specified by relative path. ALTAIR solves this problem by recording the original location in the obtained html file itself.

shift + F10(J): toggle between local and remote
It is to toggle the location to link between the local file and remote place
When you loaded the html file you got using web crawling robot, if the link is not relative, you automatically access to the server when you do the link jump. In such a case, if you change the link from remote to local by using this command, when you do the link jump, you can access the local file without accessing the original server.

7) Batch processing
shift + F7(M) MULTIPLEGET command: to access successively to several URLs specified in BATCH.LST file of ALTAIR folder, obtain them, and read the whole content as one text.
shift + F8(I) INSERTBATCH command: to add the URL (including the link marks for jumping to linked pages) the cursor is currently positioned to the BATCH.LST file of ALTAIR folder.
shift + F9(W) WIPEBATCH command: to clear the content of BATCH.LST.

8) Saving a log

shift + F2(X) SAVELOG command: ALTAIR adds to the record of File 10 all the pages obtained by accessing the internet. SAVELOG command adds and saves them in winal\log folder putting file names as YYMMDD.LOG(980824), and then clears the content of File 10.
shift + F3(C) CLEARLOG command: to clear the log recorded in File 10.

9) Getting source and converting to text

F2(S) SOURCE command: to call the source (html file) of the homepage obtained by GET command or by entering URL directly.
shift + F1(T) TEXT command: to convert a source file (html file) into a text file with links. The page becomes the same as those obtained by GET command or by entering URL directly.

10) Form input
There are two methods for form input, get and post. "get" type is an input method used by search engines. On the other hand, "post" is used for book searches and orders or BBS.
ALTAIR supports the forms of both methods. However, there are limits to the data volume you can enter, which is within 1000 bytes for get and 10000 bytes for post.
As an example, try to access
http://www.yahoo.com.

When you are told or when you find the display as:

form get

table
| Search for: |
input type=text name=p

Select name=u

with the editor mode, press the shift + F6 keys on the link mark (@mark of "@`48 submit search") and then press the enter key, just like with an ordinary link. Then,

1:text

2: send button (search)
send and quit

are spoken or displayed, so enter a searching character string in the vacant line below "1:text", move the cursor to the line of "send and quit" and press the enter key. You will get the search result. If you wish to return from the form input screen to Yahoo's homepage, press the F1 key on the form input screen. The message "cancel" is spoken or displayed, so press the enter key so that you return from the form input screen to Yahoo's homepage.

Incidentally, there are various established input formats. They are:

1. Entering character strings
<input type="text">
<input type="password">
<textarea>

2. Check mark
<input type="checkbox">

3. Single essential selection button
<input type="radio">

4. Single selection option
<select>

5. Multiple selection option
<select multiple>

6. Search button
<input type="submit">
<input type="button">

Operation on the form input screen shall be as follows:

<input type="text">->Enter a text on the vacant line below "1:text".
<input type="password">->Enter a password on the vacant line below "2:password".
<textarea>->Enter a text under "3:text area". When you wish to enter multiple lines, instead of entering actual multiple lines, place "\n" (line break character) between the previous text line and the following text line.
If you wish to handle "\n" as a character string, enter as "\\n".

<input type="checkbox">->When the message "check" or "no check" is spoken after or displayed under "4:checkbox", press the space key to select one of them.

<input type="radio">->When you press the enter key on the vacant line under "5:radio button", the value of the selected radio button is spoken or displayed. You can change the selected button by the up and down cursors and can determine the selection by the enter key. (When it is determined, the selection result is spoken or displayed on the vacant line under "5: radio button".)

<select>->When the default value is spoken after of displayed under "6:select", if you press the enter key, the default value is spoken or displayed on the top most message line. You can change the selected value by the up and down cursors and can determine the selection by the enter key. (When it is determined, the selection result is spoken after or displayed under "6: select".)

<select multiple>->With "7:multipel", you can choose multiple values. When the default value is spoken after or displayed under "7:multiple", if you press the enter key, on the top most message line, the word "selection" is spoken or displayed after the default value. By pressing the space key, you can toggle between selection and non-selection.
When you press the enter key while the word "selection" is spoken or displayed, the determined value is spoken or displayed under "7:multiple". If you repeat this series of operation several times, the multiple determined values are spoken or displayed under "7:multiple" with commas in-between.

When you move the cursor to the line "send and quit" and press the enter key, the values entered in the form 1 to 7 will be reflected in the receiver's page.

You can also process URL that ALTAIR automatically made for a format input. You will be able to perform a form input quite easily if you add them to search.lst or url.lst and customize them.
(When you add addresses to search.lst, you must change them manually to absolute URIs before adding them. As for url.lst, they are handled automatically and your manual handling is not necessary.)

For a form input, there are some formats peculiar to ALTAIR when writing URLs.

1. Specifying post type transmission by {method=post}
You can let ALTAIR know that the form is a post type by writing as follows: http://xxx.yy.zz/cgi-bin/postform.cgi{method=post}?name=aaa&email=bbb&comment=ccc

2. Specifying get type transmission by {method=get}
You can let ALTAIR know that the form is a get type by writing as follows: http://xxx.yy.zz/cgi-bin/getform.cgi{method=get}?nsearch=aaa

3. URL for form input
http://xxx.yy.zz/cgi-bin/postform.cgi{method=post}?name{text}=aaa&passwd{password}=bbb&mark{check}[ccc]=on&sex{radio}{R1,R1}{R2,R2}&age{select}{10,10}20,20{30,30}&comment{textarea}=&xx{submit}=OK

4. Special character and linefeed character within a form
When you input a form by editing URL manually, follow the rules below for entering special characters and linefeed characters.

For &, use \&.
For =, use \=.
For {, use \{.
For }, use \}.
For line break, use \n.

However, try as much as possible not to include "&", "=", "+", "{", or "}" in the entering character, because it may be a factor of wrong working.

11) MAP and FRAME
ALTAIR supports image maps (client side) and frames by handling the URL written in the tags such as "MAP" or "FRAMESET" same as ordinary links. Operation is same as ordinary links.

12) Cooperation with FTP

ALTAIR downloads files using FTP program.
To use FTP, you need to set a mail address. Mail address is set by -= option in AL.CFG. When you use an anonymous ftp, you are asked from the server to enter a password, but you shall enter the mail address here as a rule.
After setting, when you either directly specify URL starting with ftp:// or choose from the links, downloading starts. When you are asked a local file name, enter one. That's all the operations you need.
The downloaded files are saved in winal\ftp by the default setting. It is same when you download them using http protocol.
Also, you can get a folder (file list) at an ftp site by writing URL in a format as
ftp://rt3205.u-shizuoka-ken.ac.jp/pub/enable/
or
ftp://rt3205.u-shizuoka-ken.ac.jp/pub/enable/*
and by doing FTP.
The obtained file list is read or displayed after being processed into html format, and when you select a link you can download the file.
ALTAIR supports downloading from an authenticated ftp. When you write URL as
ftp://userid:password@host/path
you can download from the authenticated ftp.

13) Cooperation with MAIL
At first, set up a mailing environment using the mailer setup.

If the settings for a mailer have been done, you can send an email by directly specifying an URL beginning with mailto: or by executing the get command (F1 or G) on a mailto: link. When you are asked to enter a subject, enter a subject and press the enter key. Then, ALTAIR automatically opens an email message form. The contents of from, to, and subject are already set.
Enter the message body. When you select "save and quit" by F2 keys, a mail waiting to be sent is made in the OUTBOX.
When you press the F1 key twice and execute "send", you can send the mail.

14) Using proxy server
When you wish to access a homepage by using a proxy server, set the host name and the port number of the proxy server in VEWWW.CFG.
The format is -:HOST.DOMAIN:PORT.

Example:
-:rt3205.u-shizuoka-ken.ac.jp:8000

15) Browser mode
CTRL + DEL to toggle between editor mode, browser mode and mailer mode

When you continually use the internet, it may be bothersome to first enter the shift + F6 keys and then execute internet-related commands all the time. In such a case, you can fix the browser mode by the control + delete keys. By doing so, without entering the shift + F6 keys, you can execute the internet-related commands by just pressing the function keys. Also, with the same key, you can return to the ordinary editor mode.
With the browser mode, you cannot select commands by alphabetical keys. However, you can enter characters, move the cursor, use the hot keys just like with the editor mode.

16) Homepage management using FTP
shift + F6(O) OUTPUTHOMEPAGE command: to send and receive files using FTP between your machine and the server your homepage is located.
By writing a script in the veftp.scr of ALTAIR folder, you can send files to or receive files from the server your homepage is located.

Sample 1
------VEFTP.SCR
action=basic
host=fuji
home=public_html
user=ishikawa
password=PASSWORD

Sample 2
------VEFTP.SCR
action=custom
host=rt3205
user=ishikawa
password=PASSWORD
cd public_html
mput c:\homepage\*.htm
bye

When you write a script, follow the rules below:
1. You can send (receive) files to multiple hosts as multiple users. One session must begin with action=.

2. action=basic/custom
With "basic", you "put" the html source you are currently reading. You are asked to enter the file name used at the remote computer. The default setting is the same name with the html file currently being read.
With "custom", all the commands after a login have to be written by you.

3. You must set for host=, user=, and password= without fail. You must set for home= by action=basic.

4. You must finish a session of action=custome with "bye".

Also, with action=basic, a copy of the file which is put is saved in winal\homepage.

17) cookie and authentication
SHIFT + CTRL + \ for on/off of cookie

ALTAIR supports the user authentication such as "cookie" and "authentication (basic)".
cookie is a method of user authentication using the cookie that a host publishes. ALTAIR saves a received cookie in COOKIE.DAT of ALTAIR folder and uses the cookie from next access.

cookie is mainly used for user information exchanges and shopping basket systems. With a user information exchange, a server publishes a cookie for the user information entered from a browser. The browser saves it, and returns it every time it accesses the server.
With a shopping basket system, one example of how to use cookie is that a new cookie is published whenever a purchase is put in the basket, they are saved, and all the cookies are sent when the total is calculated. Saves of cookies depend on the direction of the server side. The cookies used to put products in the shopping basket are disposed of when the shopping is over. With ALTAIR, such a disposal is done when you quit ALTAIR.
If you set cookie off by the shift + control + \ keys, ALTAIR does not send a saved cookie when you access the homepage. When you wish to change the registered user information, you have to set it off. The default setting for cookie is on. On the other hand, with the authentication, only at the first time you are asked to enter ID and password. The ID and the password that are once entered are recorded in AUTHEN.DAT of ALTAIR folder. From the second time, an authentication is automatically done.

18) SSL
ALTAIR supports the ciphered communication called SSL (Secure Socket Layer). SSL is a standard method to maintain confidentiality for sending a credit card number for online shopping etc. Using this, you can access a homepage of https protocol.
ALTAIR supports SSLv3, TLSv1, and SSLv2. However, when you access the server supporting only the access by SSLv2, it takes about one minute to access. If you write the server's URL in SSL2.LST file, the access becomes faster.

19) RAS
If the dial-up network is correctly set, and if IE4 or above is installed, a dial-up is automatically done and you can omit to do the "dial-up connection" of shift + F4 keys.
For hanging up, the telephone charge will be cheaper if you do the "dial-up disconnection" by the shift + F5 keys.

20) Playing a DAISY book
ALTAIR can play DAISY data by importing DAISY's SMIL file.
It supports each compressor/decompressor of WAV, ADPCM, and MP3.
The get of SMIL file is same as that of ordinary homepages. When you get http://xxx.yyy.zz/sample.smil
if it is on the network, or when you get
file://c:\path\sample.smi
if it is in the local machine, the play starts immediately.
When playing, the following key inputs are interpreted as follows:
N: to the next audio element
B: to the previous audio element
R: to the beginning of the current audio element
P: to pause and restart
F: to the first audio element
H: to speed up (by 0.2, up to double speed)
L: to slow down (by 0.2, down to normal speed)
T: to output a file specified by text src (default)
U: not to output a file specified by text src
X: to quit the program
Q: to quit the program (equal to UX)

21) Structure display mode
SHIFT + CTRL + "-" for on/off of structure display mode

Structure display mode has been introduced from Version 3.0 as a homepage display method.
With the structure display mode, a theoretical structure such as heading, table, and list, is presented. In addition, the symbols to distinguish the links in the page are added. The rendering to change lines with anchors are not done. The default setting is the structure display mode.

By the shift + control + "-" keys, you can toggle between the structure display mode and the ordinary structure non-display mode. After toggling, do reload so that you can renew the display method of the current page.
Also, by putting -/ option in AL.CFG, the default setting is changed to the structure non-display mode (ordinary rendering).

7. Mailer

1) Mailer mode
CTRL + DEL to toggle among editor mode, browser mode, and mailer mode

By the control + delete keys, you can toggle among the commands. When you press the control + delete keys once, it is for a browser mode. When you press them once more, the mode is changed to a mailer mode, and if you press them once again, it returns to the editor mode.

2) Quitting
The following are the methods to quit ALTAIR:
- After returning to the editor mode, if you press the F2 key three times, the message "quite" is spoken or displayed. Press the enter key, and when you are asked "Do you wish to quit?", press the enter key again to quit.
- When you press the control + shift + K keys, you are asked "Do you wish to quit?", so press the enter key to quit.

- advanced operation for sending mails -

advanced operation 1
to make it easier to specify mail receivers by using an address book

When you send a mail, you can specify multiple addresses by putting commas between the addresses. However, it may be bothersome to enter all the addresses when you are sending a mail to many addresses or sending mails often to the same group.
In such cases, you can make an address book as follows.
The file name of the address book is alias.rc and it shall be placed in the program directory (the folder which winal.exe is in).

By entering, at the position to enter the receiver names, the group name or abbreviated address written on the right of "*alias" as follows, the mail is sent to the addresses written below the alias name when you actually send it.

<Example of alias.rc>
------------------------------
;alias.rc
*alias AAA
A001@bbb.co.jp
A002@ccc.ne.jp
A003@eee.or.jp
*alias CCC
C001@aaa.co.jp
C002@bbb.ne.jp
C003@ccc.or.jp
C004@ddd.ac.jp
----------------------------
With the above example, if you type "AAA" at the position to enter the receiver names, the mail is automatically sent to the following three addresses:
A001@bbb.co.jp
A002@ccc.ne.jp
A003@eee.or.jp.
Also, if you type "AAA,CCC" for the receiver names, the mail is sent to the following seven addresses:
A001@bbb.co.jp
A002@ccc.ne.jp
A003@eee.or.jp
C001@aaa.co.jp
C002@bbb.ne.jp
C003@ccc.or.jp
C004@ddd.ac.jp.

advanced operation 2
to send attached files

To an ordinary text mail, you can attach binary files, etc.
When a sending mail is made, the following header is loaded to the editor:
------------------------------
From: abcd@jsrpd.or.jp
To: stuff@abc.ac.jp
Cc:
BCC:
Subject:
X-Attachment:
----------------------------

Specify the attaching file name after "X-Attachment:" by using its full path.
You can write multiple file names by putting commas in-between.
By this, when the mail is sent, the attached files are automatically encoded into MIME format, attached to the end of the body of the mail, and sent with the mail.

8. Shell

1) Shell mode
CTRL + HOME for shell mode

When you use shell mode, you can use command prompts in ALTAIR. As shell mode is one of the file buffers, you can use ALTAIR's edit function. Using the edit function, you can read the command prompt output later or copy the content to another file buffer.
A command prompt means the "command prompt" in the Windows' menu. With a command prompt, you operate by entering the orders called "commands" directly from the keyboard. For example, if you enter the command "dir", the list of the current directory is read aloud or displayed. Although you have to remember commands, once you get used to them, you can get a convenient environment that you can operate the program directly.

2) Quitting shell

When ALTAIR quits, the shell quits as well. With Windows 95/98/Me, however, there are some occasions that you cannot quit the shell. Therefore, quit the shell explicitly by "exit" command as much as possible before quitting ALTAIR.
Also, even when you once quit the shell by "exit" command, you can start the shell again if you enter shell mode by the control + home keys.

3) Command input
After starting shell mode by the control + home keys, you can give commands just like ordinary command prompts.

4)Edit function
With the shell mode, you can use almost all the edit functions of ALTAIR.

5) No-linebreak command input

By the shift + enter keys, you can send to a command a character string without a linefeed. Taking "copy" command for example, when you are asked "Are you sure? Overwrite xx. (Yes/No/All)", you have to enter one character when using command prompt. However, with ALTAIR's shell mode, characters are not given to the command until you enter the enter key. When you enter the enter key, the characters are sent to the command together with the linefeed character. When you wish to send a character string to a command excluding linefeed character, use the shift + enter keys. For example, if you enter y key and the shift + enter keys, you can send y character alone to the command.

6) History
You can recall the command you entered in the past by the control + "/" keys and the control + shift + "/" keys.

7) Sound play
CTRL + "@" to toggle automatic sound play
ESC to stop automatic sound play

In addition, you can stop the sound play if you once get out of the shell mode by using the control + home keys.

8) File name completion
You can complete file names by the control + "." keys and the control + shift + "." keys.
With this function, when you enter a file name, if you enter a part of the name and press the control + "." keys, a file name that fulfills the condition is read aloud or displayed.
If you press the control + "." keys again, the next candidate is announced or displayed. With the control + shift + "." keys, the previous candidate is announced or displayed.
With this file name completion mode, when a folder is found, "\" is spoken or displayed after the folder name. When you wish to do the completion within this folder, if you type "*" and enter the completion mode with the control + "." keys, you can continue the completion in the folder.
If you use the above function, you do not need to enter the file names manually and can enter the ones swiftly.

9) Shell setting option
Usually, cmd.exe or command.com is automatically set in the command interpreter used by shell mode.
When you wish to explicitly use another command interpreter, you can specify it by an environment file (al.cfg).
-)Pcommand.com to set a name of command interpreter
-)I/q to set a parameter for command interpreter startup
-)Rcrlf You can specify the linefeed code, crlf or lf, to send to the command interpreter. (When you do not specify one, crlf is used.)

Example: For using "bash" attached to Cygwin32, specify as follows:

-)Pc:\cygwin\bin\bash.exe
-)I--login -i
-)Rlf

10) Tag jump
F1 for tag jump

This is a function for a programmer. It is the function to operate C compiler, etc in the shell mode and to automatically jump to the error based on the error information read aloud or displayed with the file and the line number.
When you press the tag jump key on the display of a compile error for Borland C++ or Visual C++, the file with the error opens in File 1 and the cursor moves to the error.

For example, suppose the following error message is spoken or displayed when you are compiling a program.
c:\test\src\sampmain.cpp(121): error C2143: syntax error: Missing ';' before 'else'
When you put the cursor on the message and press the F1 + enter keys, sampmain.cpp opens in File 1 and the cursor moves to the line 121.
