Persons with severe disabilities have many activity limitations and participation restrictions. Orphan products are expected to be effective tools to facilitate their life. In order to develop orphan products, it is very important to integrate advanced technologies into proper system to fit the user’s needs. However, this process remains difficult, because of the complexity of the user’s characteristics (body functions and life style), but also because of other issues, such as small markets and social system. 　The purpose of this symposium is to put into evidence the problems related to the development of orphan products and propose “user participation” to overcome these problems.
